TODO HERITAGE VILLAGE – THE HEART OF MANGGARAI KINGDOM CIVILIZATION
Nestled in the heart of Manggarai, Todo Village stands as a living testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the Manggarai people. While many travelers are drawn to its beautiful landscapes and traditional architecture, Todo Village also preserves the fascinating legacy of the ancient kingdom civilization system that once flourished across Manggarai. As visitors walk through the traditional village, surrounded by ancestral houses and sacred cultural symbols, they are transported back in time to an era when kingdoms ruled the highlands of Flores. The village was once an important center of the Manggarai Kingdom and remains deeply connected to the traditions, customs, and spiritual beliefs of the local people. The legacy of this ancient civilization can still be seen in the intricate carvings, ceremonial artifacts, megalithic stones, and traditional rituals that continue to be preserved and practiced by the community today. Every structure and sacred space within the village carries symbolic meaning, reflecting the philosophy and social values of the Manggarai people. The traditional kingdom civilization system in Manggarai, known locally as “Jama,” played an important role in shaping the region’s social, political, and cultural identity. Through the establishment of royal lineages, customary laws, and community governance systems, Jama became the foundation of Manggarai society for generations. Today, the spirit of this heritage continues to live on in Todo Village, where visitors can experience authentic cultural traditions, learn about the history of Manggarai civilization, and witness how ancestral wisdom still influences daily life in Flores.

- Niang Wa/Keka and Niang Teruk located on the western side.
At the center stands Niang Mbowang, the main ceremonial building surrounded by neatly arranged stone structures that create a beautiful and symbolic cultural landscape. ach traditional house in Todo Village has its own unique function, ranging from the residence of traditional leaders to sacred spaces used for storing ancestral heirlooms and ceremonial objects.
Historical Relics : Dutch Cannons & Sacred Compang
Before entering the main area of Todo Village, visitors are welcomed by five ancient cannons believed to date back to the Dutch colonial era. These cannons serve as historical evidence that Todo Village was once an important center of political and military power in Manggarai. Around the compang are several ancient graves belonging to royal descendants and respected community figures. Visitors can also find traditional menhirs — upright stone monuments carved with symbolic human faces that hold deep philosophical and spiritual meaning within Manggarai culture.
The Sacred Human Skin Drum : A Mysterious Cultural Heirloom
One of the most unique and mysterious heirlooms preserved in Todo Village is a sacred drum believed to be made from human skin.

According to local stories, the drum was created as a form of respect toward the ancestors and is only used during important traditional ceremonies.
